Armed with nothing but two mics, a mac and a squeaky pig, DJ Shabushabu delivers three no school anthems, featuring production from Osaka pal Kani – a dense and squashed MC-led hip hop jam. “Beatlebox” was originally created for an aborted beatboxing release; Shabushabu spits out the beat over some Carl Craig-esque swirling swings.
On side B The Marcia Blaine School For Girls step up a gear with “Kiss Di Dark”, a healthy slice of ragga hiphop begging the girls to ‘Kiss the light like a Sean Paul did’. Two thirds of Marcia make an appearance as Rose & Sandy sing A Tribute to Octopus Robinson – a dark melodic electronica number with more beatboxing and the sound of a mic twatting a radiator (recently heard as a soundtrack to a set of three sort films for Channel 4 Ideas Factory).
“The Village Orchestra” rounds thing off with the booty rave anthem that is “Red Lever” – the sound of Squarepusher being dragged through a cheap-assed Miami titty bar. Ruff!
This release is limited to three different hand prints, blue, black and maroon on heavyweight manila sleeves. Designed by Glasgow graphic designer Fi$t and screen-printed by Jelly at the legendary Chateau.
