Calum Morton, AKA Spencer, is one of those DJ’s hiding in plain sight, a consistent source of stylish party-starting sets that get crowds and his peers buzzing. A thoughtful, committed and loquacious behind-the-scenes force in UK electronic music, he embarked on his journey of planning parties, releasing records and the beautiful intersection of possibilities in-between as a teenager, working in Glasgow’s world-renowned record shop and distributor Rubadub. It’s one of the many institutions that have counted on Spencer’s passion and expertise at various points over the years, including time spent working at Warp Records and as the spark driving event and lecture highlights from the Red Bull Music Academy. But he’s predominantly (and rightfully) known for being the A&R scout, events wizard, resident DJ, and sturdy pillar of support shaping all manner of activities by the Scotland-based record label and creative collective Numbers, which he co-founded in 2003 and now primarily manages alongside his brother Neil. If you’ve enjoyed Numbers records over the years – from artists like SOPHIE, Hudson Mohawke, DJ Deeon, Rustie, Jessie Ware, Jamie XX, Mosca and more – or lost your head at one of their inimitable parties, it’s likely that Spencer was at work on the records or the decks. He’s helped the label forge its global reputation in exporting the best of UK electronic music worldwide, with a sharp ear, commitment to original expression, and a deep love for the musical innovators that came before, to which he – and all of us – owe the utmost respect. Touring as a DJ for Numbers and Warp, putting together genre-busting educational and festival programs in New York, Paris, Montréal, Berlin and Tokyo, playing events at Panorama Bar, Sonár, Dommune, and Boiler Room, plus seasonal Numbers blowouts, he delivers killer mixes of music both on and off the dancefloor. Aiming for and chasing the high of the perfect track at the right time in the right place, Spencer has the musical knowledge and surefire selection that means he hits the mark right-on.
