Awesome Tapes From Africa
23:00 – 03:00
Sub Club, Glasgow
This May, the booth is gonna be taken over by the one of the sharpest dressed dudes we know and a man playing off cassette tapes.
Funkineven
Funkineven reps that sonic utopia where speaker punishing techno/electro, gherkin-esque acid and soulful boogie jams all roll into one.
His label Apron Records has given us serious heat from the likes of Greg Beato, Shanti Celeste, Shamos and Brassfoot, whilst his own productions under the names Funkineven, St. Julien or collaborations with Kyle Hall, Jay Daniel and Fatima are always on point.
Awesome Tapes From Africa
Brian Shimkovitz is the man behind the inspirational ‘Awesome Tapes From Africa’ blog and label which has exposed Ata Kak and most recently DJ Katapila to a global audience, and can turn a party out armed with only cassettes and a twin tape deck.
Now into it’s tenth year, ‘Awesome Tapes…’ began in 2006 as an mp3 blog shedding light on regional music scenes and locally-produced cassettes from the African continent, and has since grown into an internationally recognised, crowd-sourced public archive, record label and acclaimed DJ project – a one-of-a-kind source of musical information.
